Our next kids’ craft is painting with yarn- creating cool YARN ART! Grab all the yarn scraps and glue and get crafting!

Have you ever considered using yarn as a medium for painting? Because today We are going to be painting…with yarn! With its vibrant colors, textures, and endless possibilities, painting with yarn offers a new and innovative way to express yourself and create beautiful art pieces. So grab your glue and let’s dive into this colorful and inspiring technique.
I know I say this all the time-but just because I call this a kids’ craft doesn’t mean that it’s just for kids! Here is a picture I made using the same technique! So kids of all ages!

This project is part of my Kid’s Craft camp! Make sure to click on the image to see all 50 craft ideas!
Supplies to make yarn art
- Yarn (this project is perfect for scrap pieces)
- white elmers glue (for kids) or hot glue (for adults!)
- Cardstock
- Scissors
I have a whole bunch of cute clipart that we used to cover with beans and they work perfectly for this art project! You can grab those free tracing templates here!

How to create Yarn art
Prep the yarn
If the kids working on this project are smaller, it’s super helpful to cut up the yarn into small pieces, about 1 to 6 inches long. Yarn is hard to cut with the safety scissors we normally use for young kids, so it’s just a little easier to precut the yarn.
If the kids are older (or adults) I just cut as I went.
Glue
You want to work in sections. You can do this by color, or by area. Put down some glue, like drawing, just add glue all over the section you want to add yarn too.
For the watermelon, I started with the seeds.

Add the yarn
Then take your pieces of yarn and place them over the glue. You can bend them, roll them or just use tiny pieces to fill the space.
Continue on
After you have your yarn in your sectin in place, add more glue. Then add more yarn!

There really isnt any rhyme or reason to how to add yarn. You can do all swirls or all lines.

You can also fill up the whole paper with yarn or just stop at the picture!
We made some fun popsicle and ice cream that we cut out and I thought they would be darling as a garland for summer!

Think of each holiday: Spiders, ghosts, and bats for Halloween. Flowers for spring, easter eggs, candy canes etc!
Yarn on yarn
If you notice the watermelon, I did the seeds first and then filled in the yarn. But the ice cream and this strawberry I ended up doing the background color first, and added glue on top of the yarn to add the sprinkles and the strawberry seeds! Either way works!

Draw your own:
You can draw your own picture just as easy as tracing over a picture. Take a pencil and lightly sketch out your design! Kids names or letters or numbers would make this a fun learning activity!

Here is one I did where I sketched the flowers and then used hot glue!
