Make your own crochet cactus coasters

It seems a while since I last shared a crochet craft. Our crochet cherries tutorial has proved really popular over on Pinterest, so today I thought I would share my tutorial for crochet cactus coasters. They are quite straightforward to make and are a fun craft for the summer months.

List of supplies:

Yarn

Crochet hook 3.5 mm

A pair of scissors

Tapestry needle

Select a colour for the coaster and hold the open end of the yarn bundle without cutting it from the bundle. We’ll start our crochet with a magic ring. Make a loop at the open end of the bundle and insert the hook through the loop.

Yarn over and pull through the loop. Keep the short, open end secured.

Chain one on hook to secure the magic ring. We will count this as the first SC (single crochet) of this round.

Start round 1 with a single crochet stitch through the magic ring.

Work 11 or 12 more (a total of 12 or 13) single crochet through the magic ring.

Pull the short, open end of the magic ring to close the centre of the ring.

End round 1 with a slip stitch through the top stitch of the 1st single crochet.

Chain 1 on hook. We will count this as a single crochet.

Work a single crochet through the loop of the top chain (of round 1) near the hook.

Work a single crochet through the next chain.

Work 2 single crochet through the next stitch.

Continue to work 1 single crochet into a chain stitch and 2 single crochet into the next chain stitch to complete round 2.

Secure round 2 with a slip stitch.

Chain 1 on hook. We will count this as a single crochet.

Work a single crochet through the chain stitch near the hook. Work 2 single crochet through each chain stitch of round 2.

Continue to work 2 single crochet into each chain stitch of the previous round.

Secure the round with a slip stitch.

You can work another round or 2 if you want a bigger coaster or you can finish the coaster in round 3. Work a slip knot, keep 2 inches extra yarn and cut off yarn from bundle.

Use a tapestry needle to secure the open end over and under the crochet pattern on the backside. Select a yarn to stitch the spike patterns on the crochet cactus pattern.

You can use a tapestry needle or a crochet hook to stitch the spike patterns on the crochet coaster pattern.

Simply work some arrow-patterns around the centre and border of the crochet cactus pattern. Secure the yarn on the backside of the crochet pattern after you’re done.

Select a yarn for the flower pattern and start with a magic ring.

Work 6 single crochet through the magic ring.

Pull the short end of the magic ring to close the centre.

Work 1 single crochet, 1 double crochet, 1 single crochet and a slip stitch through the chain near the hook.

Start the next petal with a slip stitch through the next chain. Repeat 1 sc, 1 dc, 1sc and 1 slip stitch to make the 2nd petal. Pull out the yarn by a few inches after completing all 6 petals.

Cut off yarn from the bundle and stitch it over and under the crochet flower pattern on the backside.

Stitch the crochet flower with the crochet cactus coaster on a side to complete the craft.
