Summer Wreath DIY

I love crafts so I diyed a lot of portions of this front door wreath- but you might be able to find items at your local craft store- like the ants.

step 1: how to make the hot dogs

This whole wreath centers around the hot dog. To start I cut 3 dowels to the same size.

Take one dowel and, using sandpaper, try to round the edges to make it look more like a hot dog.

Take the remaining two dowels and cover them with air-dry clay. These will be the hot dog buns. Let dry.

This is what your formation shold look like.

When it’s dry, paint to look like a hot dog and buns. I added some dark marks on the hot dog so it would look like grill marks.

I hot-glued the hot dog in between the buns so they stay together.

Personally, I love ketchup on my hot dog, but I had a lot of red ribbon so I opted to add a splash of mustard. I used air dry clay to create a squiggle, but you could also use hot glue or even puff paint.

step 2: mustard bottle

I thought it would be fun to put a mustard bottle on the side of the hot dog. I dumped a little yellow paint in the bottle and tried to coat the bottle to look like it was half filled with mustard. Leave the lid off and let dry.

You can easily do ketchup- just add red paint!

step 3: Bows

Since this was kind of a picnic/summer vibe wreath, I wanted a gingham ribbon that looked like a picnic tablecloth. But I couldn’t find it! So I ended up buying a plastic tablecloth and cut it up to turn it into a big bow. Tied it together with zipties since hot glue would melt the plastic!

step 4: chips

I actually assembled the wrath at this point and it felt like something was missing. I thought what else do you have at a picnic? Potato salad would have been too hard to diy, so I ended up going with a bag of chips!

Dumped out the chips and clean out the bag. Add a zip tie to the back with hot glue.

Using the air-dry clay, make some chips. Very thin and round/oval shape. ONce they are dry, add a little paint. The air dry clay color is pretty close to the chip color.

Grab a small skewer or stick and hot glue to the back of each chip.

step 5: Added embellishments

I wanted to include a few ants to finish off the whole picnic vibe. Air dry clay again to make some ants to crawl around the wreath! I just put the clay directly around the skewer so they would be easier to attach to the wreath.

I also had a slice of watermelon leftover from my interchangeable holiday wreath.

There are lots of fun things you could also add to this wreath. You could even rinse out a Pepsi can and put that on the wreath!

Assemble the picnic wreath

Once you have all the little pieces ready, it’s tiem to put the wreath together.

I like to lay the wreath down and lay all the piece on top so I can make sure I like the layout.

Since each piece has a ziptie or a skewers, it’s just a matter of tying things on or pushing things into the wreath.

The hardest things to put on was the hot dog and the mustard bottle. I popped two holes in the bottom of the red basket and ran a zip tie through. Then I added a piece of paper (to look like a napkin) and hot glued it all generously! I tightened the ziptie to the wreath. After I had the placement where I liked it, I hot glued the mustard bottle right next to the hot dog basket.

ADAPTION: You can use floral wire instead of zipties!

Ziptie the chip bag to the wreath and then place the chips around like they are spilling out.

I added a few little yellow flowers around the greenery.

Hang the wreath

Once it’s all put together, hang it on your front door and smile every time you see it! The whimsy is so fun that even your guests will love it! It’s the perfect summertime wreath!
